About me!

My name is Jessie James and I’m a strength athlete, plant mom, and NCI L1-certified personalized nutrition coach. I am passionate about helping women reclaim both their bodies and their lives through empowered eating. What exactly is “empowered eating”? I define it as “The process of building awareness, sustainable habits, and a healthy mindset, with the outcome of knowing how to make informed decisions surrounding food, no matter the occasion.” No more starving yourself and wondering why the scale won’t move. No more cutting out your favorite foods, only to feel guilty about binging on them later. Just confidence and empowerment, knowing that YOU control what you eat and why, with a full understanding of the impacts on your body, and peace of mind enjoying the foods you love.

My health and fitness journey began in 2017: I had pain in my lower back, headaches, low energy, felt as if I had to stuff myself at each meal just to make it to the next one, and I had started buying clothing to cover up what I didn’t like in the mirror. I went from moderate exercise once a week to Crossfitting three times a week, but physical activity alone had zero effect on my weight: three months in and I hadn’t lost a single pound! It was only when I changed my diet that the weight began to come off and I started feeling better: stable energy throughout the day, lasting satisfaction from meals, and no more headaches!

Outside of weightloss and fueling for workouts, a game changer for me has been learning to listen to my body and respond accordingly. Appendicitis runs in my family, with my father’s exploding when he was a child, and my sister having emergency surgery for removal after getting back from an Army deployment. I decided years ago I’m going to keep mine. The added challenge of managing the flare-ups that occur with Chronic Appendicitis has made me acutely aware of my body’s signals of needing more or less of something. Between lifting and managing my flare-ups, I am constantly balancing meal size, timing, complexity, and supplementation to feel, lift, and look my best.

When I notice discomfort, low energy, or a feeling in a specific place in my body, before reaching for a pain med or energy drink, I think to myself:

“What/how much have I had to eat/drink today?”

By taking a moment to check in with myself I am able to understand why I feel a certain way, how to respond, and even how to recognize and prevent future occurrences.

There’s a reason why, even with years and years of schooling, we are never taught how and why to eat; just that we should be consuming something. Companies make money when we run on autopilot: eating what’s in front of us, running to Wendy’s for that spicy chicken sandwich we just saw on TV, and “asking our doctor to prescribe X” when we run into a problem. Listening to your body and thinking critically about how it is fueled is how you gain your power back. That can look like:

      • Feeling energized: no longer running on fumes everyday
      • Minimizing symptoms or clearing up gut issues completely
      • Less inflammation in the body, leading to a more pain-free life
      • Clothes fitting better and the scale FINALLY moving in the direction you want
      • Better mood and more balanced hormones
      • Stronger immune system and less reliance on medications

The food industry and pharmaceutical companies don’t want you to feel better. They don’t want you informed and empowered.

But I do.

And that’s why I started New Horizon Coaching: to share the knowledge I’ve gained and empower women to make informed decisions about their bodies.
